Resilienceapac – Caring for an aging nation has become a critical priority for Singapore as it prepares to meet the demands of a rapidly greying population. With nearly one in four citizens projected to be aged 65 and above by 2030, the government is rolling out targeted healthcare reforms to better support the elderly in both care quality and affordability.
A key element of these reforms is the formal recognition of family medicine as a medical specialty. This move elevates the role of general practitioners in managing long-term health conditions, a growing concern among older adults. The government also requires registration for psychologists, aiming to strengthen oversight in mental healthcare an often-overlooked aspect of aging.
To ensure ethical practice, especially toward vulnerable senior patients, regulations on healthcare advertising are also under review. These steps reflect a broader strategy to enhance professional standards across the healthcare sector while protecting the elderly from misinformation.

Caring for an aging nation also means reducing the financial strain of everyday healthcare. The expanded Flexi-MediSave program now allows individuals aged 60 and above to use up to S$300 annually from their MediSave or their spouse’s to pay for outpatient treatments. This eases access to preventive care and chronic condition management.
Another major reform is the introduction of the Matched MediSave Scheme. Starting in 2026, the government will match voluntary cash contributions to MediSave accounts for lower-income seniors, up to S$1,000 per year through 2030. This initiative helps older adults build financial security for future medical needs.
Caring for an aging nation is not just about healthcare services it’s about building a resilient system that empowers seniors to live with dignity. Singapore’s latest reforms represent a holistic, forward-looking approach to aging that blends medical, financial, and regulatory solutions. These measures position the country as a regional leader in senior health policy. Offering a roadmap for societies facing similar demographic challenges.
