Resilienceapac – Bangladesh Lights Up millions of homes with clean and renewable solar energy, transforming lives across the country. Through an innovative Solar Home System (SHS) program, over two million households in remote areas have gained access to electricity, significantly improving their quality of life.
The program, managed by the government-owned Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), introduced an accessible financing model to ensure affordability. Using a microcredit system, households made a small down payment, with the remaining cost paid over three years. Partner organizations facilitated the installation and maintenance, applying for refinancing from IDCOL to keep the initiative sustainable. This public-private collaboration made solar energy a practical solution for rural communities, proving that renewable energy can reach even the most remote areas.

Bangladesh Lights Up rural households not just with electricity, but with opportunities for a better future. With reliable lighting, families enjoy increased security at night, reducing crime and safety risks. Children now have more time to study after dark, improving educational outcomes. Businesses, such as small shops and cottage industries, have flourished with extended working hours, boosting local economies.
Health conditions have also improved as solar energy reduces reliance on kerosene lamps, which emit harmful fumes. With cleaner air inside homes, families experience fewer respiratory issues. Additionally, the shift to solar power has cut energy costs for households, allowing families to allocate savings to other essential needs. The program also contributes to environmental sustainability, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and promoting cleaner energy use.
Bangladesh Lights Up its rural communities through a visionary program that started as a small pilot in 2003, aiming to electrify just 50,000 homes. Over the years, it expanded rapidly, proving the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in delivering renewable energy solutions. By the time the program concluded in 2018, it had become one of the world’s most successful off-grid solar initiatives.
