Resilienceapac – Policy Experts Unite as leaders from across Asia-Pacific gather in preparation for the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) for the Global Plastics Treaty. The meeting, set to take place in Geneva from August 5–14, 2025, is viewed as a pivotal moment in the effort to create a binding international agreement addressing plastic pollution.
Hosted by the global movement Break Free From Plastic (BFFP). The regional pre-negotiation forum brought together policy experts, environmental advocates, and civil society organizations. The goal: to synchronize national strategies, elevate regional priorities, and present a unified front on the international stage.
Discussions focused on pushing for strong treaty elements. Including limits on virgin plastic production, global waste reduction targets, and support for communities most affected by pollution. Policy Experts Unite not only for environmental protection. But also to ensure social justice and equity are central to treaty outcomes.

Plastic pollution remains a critical threat in Asia-Pacific, where coastal communities and informal waste workers are disproportionately impacted. Delegates emphasized the need for inclusive negotiations that reflect the region’s diverse challenges.
Representatives from countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Fiji emphasized the urgent need to provide financial and technical support that ensures smaller nations stay included. Participants also called for recognition of the contributions of waste pickers and local movements in reducing plastic pollution on the ground.
A representative from Thailand noted, “This treaty must work for people, not just policies. Communities on the frontlines need protection, resources, and a seat at the table.”
With INC-5.2 fast approaching, Policy Experts Unite to amplify Asia-Pacific’s voice in what may become one of the most important environmental treaties of this decade. By aligning early and building strong coalitions, the region aims to influence negotiations in Geneva and beyond.
The Asia-Pacific gathering marks not just a step in diplomacy. But a deeper movement toward accountability, equity, and global environmental stewardship driven by united policy expertise and people-powered advocacy.
