Resilienceapac – Asia on the Boil a phrase that captures the urgent climate reality now gripping the continent. According to the State of the Climate in Asia 2024 report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Asia is warming nearly twice as fast as the global average, with average temperatures in 2024 reaching 1.04°C above the 1991–2020 baseline. This rapid increase is not just a statistical anomaly it’s a clear alarm bell for the region’s ecosystems and populations.
Asia is experiencing a dangerous acceleration in temperature. The WMO’s findings highlight that the continent is becoming a climate hotspot, where the impacts of warming are amplified. From prolonged heatwaves to disruptions in agriculture and health systems, the effects are becoming more widespread and more intense. Asia on the Boil reflects more than just heat it’s about cascading consequences, from extreme weather to social and economic disruption.

In 2024, marine heatwaves scorched over 15 million square kilometers of ocean surface, severely impacting the Asia-Pacific’s marine biodiversity. Fish migration, coral bleaching, and declining seafood stocks are harming food security in coastal communities. Rising sea levels exacerbated by ocean heat and ice melt are swallowing coastlines, especially in vulnerable areas like Bangladesh and Pacific island nations. These changes threaten the very survival of millions who rely on the sea.
The Himalayas and Tian Shan, known as Asia’s “water towers,” are losing ice at alarming rates. Their glaciers feed rivers that sustain agriculture, energy, and drinking water across South and Central Asia. WMO warns that this accelerated melt raises the risk of floods in the short term and water scarcity in the long term, as the glaciers retreat further. The loss of this critical water source could affect hundreds of millions.
